Briefing Session on the Preparation of the Jakarta Preparatory Committee Meeting of the World Summit on Sustainable Development

The Earth Summit held in Rio de Janeiro in 1992 was considered a breakthrough in combining the three pillars of environmental conservation, social and economic development to commit to the implementation of sustainable development described in the agenda 21. After the Summit there were positive improvement in sustainable development, among others, the accomplishment of hundreds of international environmental agreements. However, this commitment has not been transformed into satisfying implementation of agenda 21. The condition of environment, in general, has deteriorated rather than improved in the last 10 years and the social and economic gap between developed and developing countries are widened.

Having the above-mentioned situation, the United Nations has decided, through its resolution 55/199, to conduct a ten-year review of the implementation of agenda 21 in a summit called the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD), which will be held in Johannesburg, South Africa, in September 2002. The review will focus on the identification of accomplishment, new challenges and opportunities and areas where further effort are needed in the implementation agenda 21 and renew political commitment and support for sustainable development.

On the processes leading up to the Summit, Indonesia has two significant roles, namely as Chairman of the Bureau of the Preparatory Committee (Prepcom) of WSSD and as the host of the final session of the Preparatory Committee at the ministerial level to be held in Jakarta from 27 May to 7 June 2002.

The meeting between the National Committee, co-chaired by Minister for Foreign Affairs and State Minister for Environment, and a number of Ambassadors/Head of Missions and representatives of International Organizations based in Jakarta is intended to update on the state of the preparation by Indonesia to host the ministerial level Prepcom meeting in Jakarta. The meeting is also aimed to mobilize political and financial support from donor countries as well as international organisations.

As part of the national preparation to host the ministerial meeting in Jakarta and to fully participate in the Summit, the Government of Indonesia has taken the necessary steps including the establishment of a National Committee to conduct the substantive as well as logistical arrangement for the meeting. In this regard, the Government of Indonesia welcome the positive response of UNDP on Indonesian initiative to established a project named “Support to Indonesia for The World Summit on Sustainable Development”.
